In this review, we’re going to be looking at the Shark APEX AZ1002 Upright Vacuum. This is a very powerful upright vacuum that offers a number of excellent features, all of which make vacuuming an easy and pleasant experience.
Right away, you’ll notice that this upright vacuum has a fairly simplistic design, and isn’t nearly as bulky or as large as many other upright vacuums. Most of the weight comes from the motor and dirt tank, which are contained within a square unit that is directly attached to both the handle, and the cleaner head.
Moving this upright vacuum around is easy, due to the lack of weight and bulk. Using it is also quite easy, since there aren’t very many buttons or features, and everything is labeled and delineated.

While you’re using this upright vacuum, you have access to three different vacuuming modes. Each one of these modes is a little different, and they all make use of the unique design that this upright vacuum has.
Most of the time, you’ll be using this vacuum in “Upright Mode”. Upright Mode is the vacuum’s primary mode, and it’s when you use the vacuum just as you would any other upright vacuum. You push it across your floors, using the handle, and you’re able to vacuum on a variety of different flat, floor-level surfaces.
Sometimes, though, you need some more mobility and flexibility. Upright Mode isn’t always ideal for those particular situations, and that leads to “Powered Lift-Away Mode”.
All of the components that this vacuum relies on are contained within the square unit that sits in the middle of the vacuum. You can pick up that square unit, and move it around to various spaces and areas that Upright Mode won’t allow you to reach. Then, using the extendable cleaner head and brushroll, you can reach underneath furniture and in tight and cramped spaces that require extra mobility.
While those two modes are fantastic, and they will work for most vacuuming tasks, there is another vacuuming mode that this upright vacuum offers. This mode is that of “Above-Floor Mode”, and Above-Floor Mode is when you detach the vacuum’s unit, and then use a smaller cleaning tool.
This cleaning tool can be used on stairs, couches, curtains, and various other spaces and surfaces. It’s not a large cleaning tool, but it’s good at removing dirt and dust from thick spaces.
To properly utilize those three cleaning modes, this upright vacuum includes two very useful features that make the entire vacuuming process easier, and more efficient.
One of these features is that of DuoClean Technology. DuoClean Technology is a technology that involves using two brushrolls, rather than just one. These two brushrolls are on the motorhead of the vacuum, and they consist of thick bristles that are able to dive deeply into thick surfaces.
If you are vacuuming on a carpet or a rug, then both of those brushrolls will be able to dive into the depths of that carpet/rug, loosening up all of the dirt, dust, and debris that happens to be within the surface. If you’re just vacuuming on a hard floor, then DuoClean Technology helps to polish the surface of that floor, making it look a little nicer and cleaner.
The other feature is that of Zero-M, which is a unique technology that allows for hair to be removed from the brushroll, without you having to remove it yourself. What Zero-M does, is it makes the entire process of vacuuming a lot easier, and it ensures that you don’t have to perform as much maintenance on the vacuum.
Overall, this is an excellent upright vacuum that offers a plethora of great features, and an easy and convenient design. If you are looking for an upright vacuum that is extremely powerful, efficient, and convenient, then you can’t go wrong with this one.
But, with that being said, this upright vacuum costs quite a bit more than most of the others that you can purchase. This price is due to the unique design of the vacuum, as well as the performance that it offers. And, if you don’t need those things, then this may not be the best upright vacuum for you.
