When choosing between the vast array of Roomba robot vacuums, small distinctions can make a big difference for the cleanliness of your home.
When looking at the iRobot Roomba 671 and the iRobot Roomba 690, you are indeed looking at small variations in their abilities. They are both from the low to mid-range of Roomba robots and ideal for smaller rooms or as an extra cleaner for another floor of your home.

Cleaning Abilities
They share many features such as the 3 stage cleaning system with one brush dislodging the dirt, dust and pet hair and the 2nd brush sweeping it all into the debris bin through the filters. The edge sweeping brush reaches corners, wall edges and around furniture legs, places often missed by other robot vacuums. In general, these vacuums do very well on hard floors and shorter pile carpets but can struggle or get stuck on deeper pile carpets and rugs.
They have similar suction power, so the cleanliness of areas vacuumed is comparable, and with the Dirt Detector sensors, the vacuums will focus on areas with more dirt to ensure thorough cleanliness. Both machines also have the cliff detector function which stops them falling downstairs or toppling over edges.

Battery and Recharge
The iRobot Roomba 671 and the iRobot Roomba 690 share a battery life of 90 minutes on hardwood floors but less on carpets and even less if there is a great deal of maneuvering up and down surfaces. Both vacuums return to their docking stations when the scheduled cleaning is done or, very cleverly, if their batteries are running down. However, they do not resume cleaning after recharging like some of the higher end models. The batteries take, on average, 3 hours to recharge.
Connectivity
On the connectivity front, they are compatible with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant so you can schedule your cleaning for the next 7 days or, with the use of the Roomba App, you can send commands or to them through your phone, computer or other smart devices, ensuring you can bring home visitors without worry. The App can also monitor actions and give reports.

Size and Operation
With regards to the size, design, and weight of the iRobot Roomba 671 and the iRobot Roomba 690, they are nearly identical except for the 671 being 20 millimeters shorter, which could make a difference as it zooms under your sofas and low furniture.
Neither machine is particularly silent, but the 690 model runs at a higher decibel level of 68 against the 62 dB produced by the 671. With 68 dB being the sound of a standard vacuum cleaner and 62 dBs being that of an average air-conditioning unit, the difference is noticeable.
Navigation
Another more positive difference with the 690 model is that it has a logic-based mapping system to plan and navigate around your rooms, whereas the 671 moves in a more random manner, taking longer to clean the same areas.
Therefore, the 690 is less likely to miss out on floor sections and leave a patch of debris. What’s more, the 690 has a wider space range before it needs recharging. This makes the 690 better for larger areas.

Product Care
In both cases, you will need to take care of your little robot friend. Filters need to be kept clean (by blowing air through them, no washing) and replacing every couple of months depending on usage and dust; brushes need to be kept free of hair and fibers and replaced once or twice a year; and finally the debris bin needs to be emptied pretty much after every cycle.
Virtual Walls
The biggest difference between the two machines is the Virtual Wall Barrier concept. The 690 comes with one barrier which you can move to suit your needs. The barrier ensures the vacuum will not go into certain rooms (your bedroom whilst you are sleeping) or near certain areas (Granny’s antique Ming vase). However, it should be noted you can buy virtual wall barriers for the 671 but they are not cheap and, if keeping it out of specific areas is important for you, the 690 option makes more sense.

Conclusion
When comparing the two machines, it is mostly the logic based mapping process, the larger space coverage and the Virtual Barrier concept which elevate the 690 from the iRobot Roomba 671. With very little price difference between the two, the iRobot Roomba 690 is certainly a higher level in smart thinking machines from the mid-range of Roomba robot vacuums.
