Neato Robotics is without a doubt one of the best manufacturers of robot vacuums. Its D-Series offers the same high performance as high-end models at a reasonable price. Aside from a few features, all models of the Connected D-Series are generally similar. The Botvac D3 is the basic model, while the Botvac D7 is the cream of the series. This article looks at the similarities and differences between the Naeto Botvac D4 and D5. The Neato D5 is a slight upgrade of the D4. However, the differences are so negligible that you may not notice the difference in performance. Here is a head to head analysis between the Neato D4 and D5 robot vacuums.

Design

Like all the other D-Series models, the D4 and D5 have a unique ‘D’ shape. This unconventional design helps both robot vacuums access debris on wall edges and corners with ease. They also feature slim and wide designs for easy navigation under furniture and a wider cleaning path, respectively. They feature the same combo brush, which is larger than other robotic vacuums and is also detachable for easy cleaning and replacement. They also come with a razor to cut up tangled hair on the combo brush. One clear difference between the two models is that the D5 comes with side brushes for clearing debris on edges and corners, while the D4 does not.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the two robovacs work well in all types of floors, including hardwood, tile, and carpets. The primary functions of the D4 are operated by a single control button at the top, while other features are controlled by the Neato app. For regular cleaning, the button is tapped once, while for the spot cleaning the button is tapped twice. The spot cleaning feature is used to clean a 7 square feet area and is handy when it comes to cleaning specific dirty spots.

Neato D4

The D4 comes in two cleaning modes, Eco and Turbo that are activated through the app. The Eco mode is the least powerful and produces around 70dB of noise. The Turbo mode is powerful and is also relatively louder at 73dB. This model is very effective when it comes to cleaning the middle of the room, but inefficient in corners and wall edges.

The D5 is also operated by a single button, while the rest of the features are run by its app. One press of the button starts cleaning a whole room, while two presses are for the spot clean. It also has two cleaning modes, the House for the whole home and the Spot for specific areas within a seven square feet area. It comes with one high power setting, the Turbo and does not feature the Eco mode. At maximum power, the D5 produces a 69dB noise rating, which is quieter than the D4 on Eco mode.

The D5 has a higher battery runtime of up to 90 minutes, while the D4 runtime is 75 minutes. However, they both return to the charging dock automatically when the battery runs low. After recharging, they can resume work from where they left off. A special feature of the two, the Quick Boost, allows them to calculate the amount of charge needed to finish the work. This reduces the cleaning time. They also support schedule cleaning, which allows you to program them to clean according to your own preferences.

Filtration

They both have a 0.7-liter bin that is easily accessible via the top. The difference is in the type of the filter used. The Neato Botvac D4 features a basic filter, which is not very effective when it comes to trapping dust and allergens. It is therefore not recommended for people, who suffer from asthma and allergic reactions. The D5, on the other hand, comes with an ultra-performance filter that is capable of trapping tiny particulates down to the size of 0.3 microns. It is among the most advanced filters in the market today.

Navigation

The two robot vacuums utilize the LaserSmart Technology that allows them to create a map of the entire home. This allows them to create the perfect cleaning plan that the two will adhere to while cleaning. Using the charging dock as the bearing/starting point, the two robotic vacs move in well-defined straight lines, which is far more accurate than random movements. You can also create “no go areas” by drawing boundary lines on the map, which informs them where and where-not to clean.

Neato D4

Thanks to the laser technology, the two can work perfectly well in the darkness. Unfortunately, the no-go areas feature does not work in the dark. As an upgrade from the D4, the D5 includes a magnetic border tape that allows you to create a no-go zone boundary that works perfectly at night. It should be noted however that the no-go areas feature only works when upfront cleaning is activated from the app and not from the control button in both cases. The two wheels on both units allow for seamless movements in all floor types, without friction or scratching.

Smart Technology

The two robot vacuums are generally operated by the Neato cleaning app. You will need either a smartphone or a smartwatch with Wi-Fi connectivity when working with either of the two. In addition, they support both Amazon Alexa and Google Home and are therefore receptive to voice commands. The IFTTT support is also a great feature that allows you to set action controls that will signal the two robovacs to start or stop cleaning. For instance, you may set them to start cleaning when you go out and stop when you come into the house.

Conclusion

Both robot vacuums offer high performance. However, the Neato Botvac D5 is obviously better than Neato D4 as it has more battery life, can clean corners and edges efficiently and has magnetic border tape that blocks it from cleaning various areas at night. They both receive our seal of approval.
